Join us for our Friendship Weekend in Birmingham UK - 10th to 12th May 2019

How do you fancy a Friendship Weekend with IPA friends and colleagues in England's 'Second City' of Birmingham?

This year, the IPA Birmingham, West Midlands branch have arranged a Friendship Weekend for visitors from across the UK and abroad.

We have a wide variety of activities already booked and IPA colleagues, friends and families can join us for some or all of the activities shown below.

If you are a fan of the British drama 'Peaky Blinders' then you will be able to see some of the sights and learn more about the history behind the series. Additionally, there will be lots of opportunities to see other parts of Birmingham and meet old IPA friends and new!

The weekend activities so far include:

1 - Friday 10th May 2019 - 1900hrs -  A welcome buffet and evening at Tally Ho! Sports and Conference Centre in Birmingham. This will include a welcome briefing for the weekend, music, quiz, photographs and a chance to catch up with old friends and new.  Cost £13.00 per person.

2 - Saturday 11th May 2019 - 1000hrs to 1200hrs (meet in central Birmingham at 0945hrs) - A guided walking tour of Birmingham City Centre and the Jewellery Quarter. The tour will be led by a guide/serving West Midlands Police Staff member. Branch members will be present to escort the tour. Cost £10.00 per person.

3 - Saturday 11th May 2019 - 1300hrs to 1700hrs - Steelhouse Lane Lock-up and Pop Chorus Concert.  Spend an afternoon at the Old Central Lock-up cells....often frequented by the original 'Peaky Blinders' and now a permanent museum. Following an opportunity to tour the cells and learn about the history of the site, there will be a concert delivered by the amazing Pop Chorus in this unique setting. Cost  £10.00 per person.

4 - Saturday 11th May 2019 - 2000hrs - An evening meal at a top Indian Restaurant in the City Centre.  Costs for this meal will be paid for by individuals attending and are extra to the weekend tickets.  We are able to provide alternative restaurant suggestions if you feel you would rather a different cuisine.

5 - Sunday 12th May 2019 - 1200hrs - Did you know there are more canals in Birmingham than in Venice? At lunchtime we will be taking a canal boat through the city and enjoying a lunch on board. This will be a great opportunity to experience the city from a different viewpoint and enjoy a buffet-style lunch with friends.  Cost - £20 per person.

We are not providing accommodation with the above costs. The prices shown above are for the event tickets only. Individuals can book their own accommodation in Birmingham City Centre or contact bhamIPAweekend@gmail.com for further advice. bhamIPAweekend@gmail.com

Branch member raising funds for Marie Curie hospices

Birmingham branch member Inspector Mark Stokes (West Midlands Police) and colleague (retired Detective Sergeant) Paul Robinson are currently two weeks in to a gruelling cycle ride from John o' Groats to Lands End. Affectionately known in sporting circles as JOGLE .... whether cycling or running this route, it is extremely challenging!

Mark first conquered the route from Lands End to John o' Groats some 31 years ago and this year decided it would be appropriate to complete the challenge in reverse - that is from Scotland to Lands End, NOT cycling backwards! Over the years the two friends have raised thousands of pounds for various charities and this trip will help Marie Curie cancer hospices

During some weeks of planning and training, the two friends had mapped out an alternative and considerably longer route through the outer and inner Hebrides and other Scottish islands, before hopping over to Ireland, Wales and England. As part of Mark's training plan he also recently took part in the London to Brighton cycle ride with a group of IPA branch colleagues (featured in Police World issue 3, 2010).

Mark and Paul started the JOGLE event from John o' Groats on 26th August and after some fantastic weather in Scotland they headed over to Ireland where they were greeted by IPA Region 2 secretary Pete Connolly for a much deserved beer in Belfast.

The duo then left Pete and continued into southern Ireland before catching a ferry over to Wales. In recent days the weather has taken a turn for the worse, but they have not let this dampen their enthusiasm and they are now over 800 miles into their challenge and making their way through Devon.... and are a few days away from Lands End.

You can follow their blog at www.jogle-thelongway.co.uk - why not log in and leave them a message of support?

Visit to Highgrove House

Wednesday 30th April 2008 saw 25 members and friends from the Birmingham Branch spend a thoroughly enjoyable day out at Prince Charles' home - Highgrove House.

Apart from the weather it was a fantastic day and we had a wonderful tour of the gardens. The rain did not dampen our spirits and the tour guide gave us enough information delivered in a humourous way. Many thanks to our social secretary for arranging the day ..... certainly one to remember!
